SECURITY TRAININGS · BY ASG
Aviation Security Training Overview
Aviation security training is a mandatory requirement under ICAO Annex 17 (Security: Safeguarding Civil Aviation Against Acts of Unlawful Interference) and national aviation security regulations. All personnel with direct or unescorted access to security-restricted areas (SRAs), passengers, baggage, cargo, and aircraft must receive appropriate security training before assuming their duties and at regular intervals thereafter.
The scope and content of security training varies significantly by role: security screeners need technical screening skills and threat recognition; aircraft cabin crew need security awareness and response procedures; cargo handling staff need cargo security procedures and suspicious consignment recognition; security managers need regulatory framework knowledge and security management competency. ASG provides tailored security training for each of these role groups, aligned to ICAO Annex 17, ECAC Doc 30, national CAA requirements, and IOSA SEC standards. For security management consulting support beyond training, see our Security Management Systems consulting page.
Aviation Security Regulatory Framework
Aviation security is governed by ICAO Annex 17 — Security, currently in its 11th Edition (2023). Annex 17 establishes the international standards and recommended practices for safeguarding civil aviation against acts of unlawful interference. It requires states to establish national aviation security programmes (NASPs) and to mandate security training for all relevant aviation personnel. The ICAO Annex 17 training requirements are elaborated in ICAO Doc 8973 (Restricted) — Aviation Security Manual.
In Europe, ECAC Doc 30 Part II and Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/1998 establish the detailed aviation security requirements applicable to EU member states and organisations operating within the EU aviation security area. The EU framework specifies mandatory training requirements for security screeners (certification programmes), security instructors, and management personnel. For ACC3, RA3, and KC3 security training, see our dedicated cargo security validation services.
National civil aviation authorities implement ICAO Annex 17 through national aviation security programmes (NASPs) and national security regulations. The UK DfT (Department for Transport) Aviation Security requirements, UAE GCAA security training standards, Saudi GACA aviation security programmes, and similar national frameworks create jurisdiction-specific training mandates that aviation organisations must comply with in addition to ICAO baseline requirements.
IOSA SEC standards add a further layer of airline-specific security training requirements: IOSA requires airlines to have documented security training programmes covering all relevant staff categories, with records demonstrating completion of initial and recurrent security training. For IOSA-specific security preparation, see our IOSA Audit Preparation and IOSA Training services.
Our Aviation Security Training Programmes
Security Awareness Training (All Staff)
Our Security Awareness programme provides all aviation personnel (including non-security staff who work in secure areas) with essential knowledge: aviation security threat landscape, access control procedures, suspicious object/person recognition, security incident reporting, and personal security responsibilities. Available as a half-day classroom or 2-hour online self-paced module. Suitable for annual recurrent training and initial security induction.
Security Manager & Senior Security Staff Training
Our advanced Security Management programme covers: ICAO Annex 17 and national security regulatory requirements, National Aviation Security Programme (NASP) management, security risk assessment methodologies, security audit programme design and execution, security incident management, security culture and leadership. Available as a 2-3 day intensive programme for security managers and deputies. Aligned to IOSA SEC and ECAC qualification requirements.
Cargo & Passenger Security Training
ASG provides specialized security training for cargo operations staff (cargo security procedures, suspicious consignment recognition, chain of custody management) and passenger handling staff (passenger screening support, prohibited items recognition, travel document verification). Training is aligned to EU 2015/1998, IATA ISAGO, and applicable national requirements. For ACC3/RA3/KC3 security training, see our ACC3 Validation Preparation service.

ICAO Annex 17 requires states to mandate security training for all personnel engaged in: screening of passengers, baggage, cargo, mail, and aircraft; access control; security supervision; and other security functions. The specific training content and frequency requirements are set out in national aviation security programmes and national security regulations. ICAO Doc 8973 provides detailed guidance on training programme design.
Security training frequency varies by jurisdiction and role. Under EU regulations, security screeners require regular refresher training and recertification. Most national security programmes require annual security awareness training for all relevant personnel. Security managers typically require more comprehensive annual updates covering regulatory changes and threat landscape developments. ASG can advise on your specific jurisdiction’s recurrent training requirements.
Yes. ASG’s security training programmes for airlines are designed to address IOSA SEC standard training requirements. Our security awareness and security management programmes can be delivered in a format that generates the training records and documented programme evidence required for IOSA SEC compliance. For IOSA-specific support, see our IOSA Audit Preparation service.
ASG security training is available in English, Arabic, French, Turkish, and other languages. For large-scale deployments in specific regions (Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia), we can adapt training content to local language and regulatory requirements. Contact our training team to discuss language requirements for your security training programme.
